Geoff Neal's injury has completely changed Joel Alvarez's plans. The Spaniard will now have a very different opponent in front of him: Chidi Njokuani, one of the most experienced and dangerous punchers at welterweight. Although his name may not be so well known among the large European public, the American has been competing at the highest level for almost two decades and has always stood out for a virtue that makes him an uncomfortable opponent for anyone: his ability to finish fights standing up.
Born in Dallas and of Nigerian descent, Njokuani began his sports career in Muay Thai and kickboxing long before making the leap to mixed martial arts. That past explains much of his style. He is a fighter who is comfortable trading blows at long range, uses his knees, elbows and kicks very well, and possesses a precision unusual for a fighter of his size.
At 1,91 meters tall and with a reach of 80 inches, he is one of the longest fighters in the category. Interestingly, those characteristics make the duel against Joel Alvarez especially attractive, as the Spaniard also stands out for his enormous wingspan. It will not be usual to see Joel enjoying such a clear physical advantage as on other occasions.
His path to UFC was not immediate.
After competing in promotions such as Strikeforce, Bellator or Legacy Fighting Alliance, he ended up getting his break in Dana White's Contender Series. There he impressed with a dominant performance that definitively opened the doors of the largest organization in the world.
Its debut in UFC was practically unbeatable.
He needed just a few seconds to knock out Marc-André Barriault and take a bonus for Performance of the Night. Months later he repeated the award after finishing Duško Todorović with a spectacular elbow in the first round. In just two fights he made it clear that his striking could make a difference even against consolidated opponents.
However, his career within the company has been much more irregular since then.
Defeats to Gregory Rodrigues, Albert Duraev and Michał Oleksiejczuk slowed down the great momentum with which he had arrived. Even so, he has never stopped being a dangerous opponent. His power is still there and any mistake in the distance can end the fight in a matter of seconds.
In recent times it has also undergone a major transformation.
After competing for a good part of his middleweight career, he decided to move down to welterweight for good. The change allowed him to take even more advantage of his physical advantage over most opponents and become one of the tallest fighters in the entire division.
Technically, Njokuani is a specialist in striking.
He likes to keep the fight in the center of the octagon, work with the jab to measure the distance and punish with knees when the opponent tries to close spaces. In addition, he tends to throw a lot at the body, a facet that often goes unnoticed but helps him wear down his opponents as the minutes go by.
His weakest point has historically appeared when he faces opponents capable of imposing the fight or maintaining a very high pace for three rounds. When he loses control of the distance, his striking is no longer so decisive and more spaces appear to attack him.
It is precisely there that Joel Álvarez can find some of his best opportunities.
The Spaniard arrives with one of the most dangerous submission games in the entire division and has repeatedly shown that he needs very little to take advantage of a carelessness on the ground. In addition, his offensive creativity and the variety of resources he uses make it difficult to prepare a specific plan to stop him.
On paper it will be a matchup between two fighters who enjoy looking for finishing.
Njokuani will try to keep the fight on his feet for as long as possible and take advantage of his experience in striking. Joel, on the other hand, will seek to impose his rhythm, mix distances and punish both in exchanges and in transitions to grappling.
Another interesting aspect will be the preparation.
While Njokuani had been preparing for weeks for a completely different fight against Geoff Neal, Joel arrives on short notice, but with a not inconsiderable advantage: he was already doing a top-level camp with Islam Makhachev. That means he lands at UFC 330 without the usual wear and tear of accepting a last-minute fight from home and with weeks of training against some of the best fighters on the planet.
For Njokuani, the change also forces a lot of things to rethink.
Geoff Neal and Joel Alvarez are completely different fighters. One bases much of his success on boxing and constant pressure; the other combines a very creative striking with permanent danger on the ground. Adapting a strategy in just a few days is never easy.
Beyond the result, the fight represents a great opportunity for both.
Joel is looking to establish himself definitively at welterweight after a stage of great challenges. Njokuani needs to show that he can still compete with rising challengers and remain a big name within the division.
What is clear is that the Spaniard will not have an easy debut in this new scenario.
Chidi Njokuani may not be the most mediatic opponent in the category, but he is one of the most dangerous when he manages to impose his distance. And that makes this fight one of the most demanding tests of Joel Alvarez's career since his jump to welterweight.
